Magna-Tiles® were inspired by Pythagoras of Samos (560 - 480 B.C.), who was responsible for important developments
in the history of mathematics. It was his influence and belief that the world can be better understood through number
relations. Whether through directed instruction and guidance or through open-ended creative play, Magna-Tiles® allow
young minds to experience and understand basic math and creative fun! Developing familiarity with geometric shapes
will lay a strong foundation for advanced mathematics, such as geometry and calculus.
Here are some suggestions, concepts and activities, but the imagination is a powerful force and should be allowed to work
freely and grow through exploration. Magna-Tiles® are designed to combine and work together when the basic laws of
math, science and physics are followed. The experiences become learned concepts through creative play.
These flat shape combinations will transform into 3-D objects!
Seven different flat 2-D patterns, using the same pieces can combine to create the same outcome, a cube-pyramid combination.
Magna-Tiles® can be used on vertical magnet boards, metal desks, and refrigerators. Lay them flat or try a 3-D
pyramid that magically hangs on!
Other activities and skills that can be explored:
Stacking
Splitting stacks to work with halves
Matching shapes
Observing symmetry
Covering large shapes with small ones
Creating enclosed shapes
Observing angle relationships
