LESSON PLAN: Learning About Shapes with Magna-Tiles®

Magna-Tiles® fuse science, math and creativity. And not only are they great toys for home, but they’re great learning tools for the classroom too! Here is a lesson plan you can use with your students to help teach common core objectives. Happy learning!
Common Core Objective: Describe the objects in the environment using names of shapes and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind and next to. K.G.A.1
– Name the following basic shapes: triangle, square, rectangle
– Tell where the shape is, in reference to another object
– 1 Magna-Tiles® triangle
– 2 Magna-Tiles® squares
– 1 stuffed animal or other toy
#1. Hold up the Magna-Tiles® triangle. Ask a student to name the shape.
#2. Hold up the Magna-Tiles® square. Ask a student to name the shape.
#3. Put 2 squares together to create a rectangle. Ask a student to name the shape.
#4. Introduce the students to the stuffed animal/toy.
#5. Tell the students that you are going to play a game, “Where Is The Shape?”, with the stuffed animal. Explain that the students will close their eyes as you place a shape somewhere close to the stuffed animal. When they open their eyes, the students will take turns telling you where the shape is.
Note: If you have a large magnetic board that you can place the stuffed animal in front of, you can place the Magna-Tiles® on the magnetic board above or next to the stuffed animal. This will help you better show the students the shape being above or next to the stuffed animal.
#6. Have students close their eyes while you place one of the shapes close to the stuffed animal. When they open their eyes, have a student tell you the name of the shape and where it is located, ie. next to the stuffed animal.
#7. Students can also take turns putting the shapes around the stuffed animal.
– One-on-one, have a student tell you the name of a shape and where it is in location to the stuffed animal.
– For a group assessment, have the students draw a picture of the stuffed animal with a shape next to it, above it, below it or beside it.
