*Magna-Tiles® fuse science, math and creativity. And not only are they great toys for home, but they’re great learning tools for the classroom too! Here is a lesson plan you can use with your students to help teach common core objectives. Happy learning!*

**Common Core Objectives:
**Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientation or overall size. K.G.A.2

Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect to cardinality. K.CC.B.4

**Objectives:
**Students will:

– Name the following basic shapes: triangle, square, rectangle

– Count the number of shapes used in their creation

**Materials:****
**1 set of Magna-Tiles®

**Directions:**

**#1. **Hold up the Magna-Tiles® equilateral triangle. Ask a student to name the shape.

**#2. **Hold up the Magna-Tiles® large square. Ask a student to name the shape.

**#3. **Hold up the Magna-Tiles® small square. Ask a student to name the shape.

**#4. **Put 2 squares together to create a rectangle. Ask a student to name the shape.

**#5. **Hold up the Magna-Tiles® right triangle. Ask a student to name the shape.

**#6. **Hold up the Magna-Tiles® isosceles triangle. Ask a student to name the shape.

*Note: All of the students may not grasp the concept of the different types of triangles but exposing them to the different names of triangles will lay the groundwork for them to learn the names of the triangles in the future.*

**#7. **Place students in small groups (3 or 4 students in a group). Have each group create a house, castle or animal. The teacher can choose what object the students are to create, or the students can choose.

**#8. **After each group is done creating, have each small group share their creation with the whole group. Ask the students what shapes they used in making their creation.

**#9. **Ask each group to count how many squares they used in their creation. Have a student from the group write the number on a dry erase board or paper.

**#10. **Ask each group to count how many triangles they used in their creation. (To make this more difficult ask how many equilateral triangles, isosceles triangles or right triangles they used.) Have a student from the group write the number on a dry erase board or paper.

**Extension:
**After completing this activity as a whole group, this can become a center activity. Place the Magna-Tiles® at a center and have the students who are at that center build an object. Then have each student draw a picture of his/her object and write how many triangles and how many squares he/she used.

**Assessment:
**– One-on-one, have a student tell you the name of a shape.

– For a group assessment, have the students draw a picture of the shape that you ask them to draw.
